Hempland Sweden

Next generation superfood: roasted, flavoured hemp seeds grown on Gotland. CBD flowers are sold under B2B off-take contracts.

The company

From Gotland fields to Sweden's largest retail chains

Hempland created the category of roasted, flavoured hemp seeds in Scandinavia. The company controls the value chain from contract farming on Gotland and the mainland to processing, brand and sales. That gives it a structural cost advantage over brands that buy imported raw material.

Hulled hemp seeds contain 33% protein and 9% Omega-3, compared with 20% protein and 2% Omega-3 in salmon. They are naturally gluten free, fibre-rich and minimally processed.

Philanthropy · Hemp Innovations Botswana

One crop. Six returns for people and planet.

One hectare of hemp in Botswana can feed people, supply affordable medicine, employ women, store carbon and build homes, all from a single, legal, licensed crop. HIB is built as a whole-plant model, so every part of the plant carries its own measurable social or environmental return.

  1. Seed → Food & feedNutrition bars, flour and porridge, hemp oil and protein, and seed cake as livestock feed.
  2. Flower → HealCBD for wellness and epilepsy, medical cannabis for pain and palliative care, and export revenue.
  3. Stalk → Build & replaceHempcrete for homes and schools, hemp wood and fibre, biochar and cooking briquettes.

Six impact areas

1 · Food security

Nutrient-dense seed for vulnerable communities

Complete protein, healthy fats and fibre in one shelf-stable, gluten-free ingredient with no big-eight allergens. Pathways include nutrition bars for refugee settings in the Horn of Africa, the Sahel and SADC, hemp-enriched school meals, and seed cake that replaces imported soy meal in animal feed.

2 · Health access

Affordable, locally produced cannabinoid medicine

Pain relief and palliative care where opioids are scarce, and support for patients with HIV-related nerve pain and appetite loss, alongside antiretroviral therapy rather than instead of it. With donor-funded HIV programmes disrupted in 2025, local supply cuts both cost and import dependence.

3 · Inclusive jobs

Formal rural work in a diamond-dependent economy

Planting, harvesting, trimming, sorting and packing are labour-intensive and need no prior qualifications. Women get formal contracts, persons with disabilities get adapted seated precision work, youth get apprenticeships with BUAN and NARDI, and smallholders can grow under contract with a guaranteed buyer.

4 · Climate

Carbon captured fast and stored for decades

Hemp grows 8–15 t of dry biomass per hectare per season. The carbon value is durable when it ends up in hempcrete and boards (50–100 years) or in biochar from crop residues. Deep roots improve the soil, and the crop needs little or no pesticide.

5 · Hemp wood & forests

A renewable alternative to slow-growing timber

Engineered hemp lumber and boards for flooring, furniture and school desks, plus fibre, paper, bioplastics and hemp-hurd briquettes that replace charcoal. That reduces pressure on Africa's forests and indoor air pollution from cooking.

6 · Shelter & education

A village built around the farm

Hempcrete keeps homes cool on hot days and warm on Kalahari nights, resists fire, mould and termites, and stores carbon. The plan: affordable worker housing, an early-childhood centre next to the fields so mothers can work, classrooms, and a health post.

Market

A fast-growing category driven by health, food security and climate

Hemp is one of the few crops that can be used in full: seeds for food, flowers for CBD and medicine, and stalks for fibre. Both companies operate in the highest-value applications.
